CBD products by using whole plant extractions. While using the whole hemp plant is the way to go, not all parts of the extract are included in hemp CBD products. It isn’t that they’re not good for you or are dangerous to consume, we’ll explain why many CBD products do not contain wax or chlorophyll. The reasons are a lot simpler than you might think.
What is Chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll really is just a pigment within green plants, like hemp and cannabis plants, that gives them their green color. It’s in these little pods called chloroplasts (plant cells) that live inside plant leaves. These cells are called mesophyll cells.
Chlorophyll isn’t harmful to your body. It may have some therapeutic merit and does help hemp and cannabis plants release oxygen back into the air. The pigment helps the plants soak in the sun, breaking down the energy brought to the plant by the sun, and turns that into food for the plant. The minerals and nutrients created from breaking down this energy are sent to the parts of hemp and cannabis plants that need the nourishment the most.
Plants that have higher volumes of chlorophyll are greener in color.
If you purchase hemp CBD extract products that have a greenish tint to them – some of the chlorophyll remains. Again, chlorophyll isn’t harmful; it’s just an unwanted ingredient. We’ll get to why it’s not a wanted inclusion in the next section.
Fun Fact: Chlorophyll makes a great natural pigment dye. If you’re not a fan of chemical-based dyes, you can use chlorophyll and dilute it with water to dye clothes, make tie-dye patterns and dye paper; soft fibers and it can be used as a natural paint on canvas.
Some studies have indicated that chlorophyll may possess some therapeutic benefits when it comes to inflammation and odor in animals.
If it isn’t Harmful, Why Remove Chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll just tastes bad. It’s nearly impossible to cover up the strong earthy flavor. So, because of the strong, earthy flavor of this pigment, chlorophyll is removed from most hemp CBD products – including those available at Canna Trading Co. If the hemp CBD products that you purchase are virtually clear to a very light golden color, the chlorophyll has been removed.
You may have seen chlorophyll supplements available at health food stores and pharmacies. It is often used as a supplement. If you think that your body needs chlorophyll, discuss it with your doctor first. It isn’t harmful, but it is always suggested to discuss taking any supplement with your physician first.
Hemp Plants Contain Wax?
Many plants, including hemp and cannabis plants contain plant wax. Many forms of plant wax are toxic, but this is not the case with the wax on hemp and cannabis plants. Under intense sunlight or heat lamps, hemp and cannabis plants sweat – just as the human body does. But, plants sweat wax. This is a method of protection and survival for the plants. In order for them to continue growing healthy throughout their growth cycles, the plants must protect themselves.
The wax helps protect vital nutrients within the plants. It also helps keep proper amounts of water in the plants. Exposure to light and heat causes moisture to leave the plants, but during the growing process, they need that moisture. The leaves need moisture to grow and wax on the leaves helps keep that in.
While wax from hemp and cannabis plants is removed following the extraction process, there is a use for it. The wax is often added to CBD dabs and other types of hemp and cannabis concentrates. It may also be used in some topical formulations and health/beauty products.
Why is the Wax of Hemp Plants Removed from CBD Products?
While the wax of hemp and cannabis plants has its merits, it’s just not an ideal ingredient to include. Since it’s very thick and sticky it isn’t the ideal ingredient to include in CBD tinctures or CBD vape products. It’s also not ideal for CBD edibles.
When it comes to hemp CBD vape products, if the liquid contains wax, it can clog the heat element and device in general. This can lead to device failure, explosion and general clogging.
If the wax were to be used in CBD tinctures, it would require a solvent to help thin it out. Solvents aren’t wanted ingredients either. It’s a very difficult component of hemp and cannabis plants to work with.
The wax can be used in concentrates since those are meant to be thick.
How do Extraction Companies Remove Wax and Chlorophyll from CBD Products?
It’s a bit of a complicated process. An initial extraction process takes place to obtain raw hemp extract from the plants. The most common, and preferred method, in the hemp CBD industry is CO2 extraction. This uses carbon dioxide in a carefully monitored pressure and temperature –controlled setting to retrieve the raw hemp extract. This extract contains everything that is in the plant – vitamins, nutrients, cannabinoids, terpenes, wax, chlorophyll and other plant materials.
It’s a very dark color when it’s first extracted. Cannabinoids, chlorophyll and wax all bind to the carbon dioxide molecules. So, after the initial extraction process, additional processes need to be completed to separate the unwanted components from the cannabinoids and terpenes.
When the extracted liquid has completed the necessary filtration processes, it is either sent by the extraction company or hemp CBD manufacturer to a laboratory for purity and quality testing. This is where the true answers of how well the extraction and filtration processes are held. Impurities including heavy metals, plant material, cannabinoids, terpenes, solvents, chemicals and any other elements of the liquid are analyzed. If the sample does not pass, some states will allow the batch to be remediated – meaning it can be re-filtered and tested again. If it does not pass a second time, most states will require that the batch is destroyed.
You may have thought that chlorophyll and plant wax are bad things – they really aren’t. They just aren’t wanted ingredients in hemp CBD products. In order to improve the flavor and color of hemp CBD products, Canna Trading Co. only uses hemp CBD extract that has had the chlorophyll removed.
