There’s been a lot of talk about CBD and kratom lately. Both are naturally-occurring, but they are quite different. Both have unique properties and potential benefits for the body. In some areas of the U.S., kratom has been banned.
Both occur in nature. One is awaiting regulations from the FDA since the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp. The other is quite controversial with more states banning it regularly. How can this be? We’ll explain a little later.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid that is found in both hemp and cannabis. It’s more abundant in hemp than cannabis. CBD is known for its potential healing properties and potential benefits to the body. Unlike THC, CBD does not induce a high. It’s a non-intoxicating compound.
What you might not know about CBD is that it’s a polypharmacological substance. This means is that it supports relief of several pathways in the body at once.
What is Kratom?
Kratom is a natural herb. The effects vary depending on the dose. Kratom possesses alkaloids that do double duty as a stimulant and sedative.
It’s almost impossible to predict how your body will react to kratom. This is because several factors, such as your weight and metabolism, play a role in how the herb will affect you. It’s important to use very small doses if you are new to kratom.
Kratom has more active ingredients – mitragynine and hydroxymitragynine. Some evidence says that kratom might have analgesic, anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant properties. This is a popular herb for stress reduction and pain management.
How Kratom Reacts in the Body
Using kratom in small to moderate doses is best. These doses are said to help your body produce energy. Some have claimed to have an increased desire for sex, too.
One effect of kratom is similar to the effects of some cannabis strains by making you more talkative. For those with social anxiety or find social settings difficult, a very small dose of kratom might help. CBD may also support a better response to stressful situations allowing you to have a conversation or feel more relaxed in these settings.
What’s the downside of using kratom? Some people have expressed that it leaves them feeling foggy and generally having an uncomfortable feeling that isn’t quite explainable.
Kratom in High Doses
Using higher doses of kratom is also similar to using larger doses of cannabis. Those bigger doses might leave you feel calm, sedated, overly emotional and less aware of pain. This may seem like a good thing, but it can also lead to sweating, nausea and itching.
Whether the dose of kratom is small, moderate or large, you can’t predict how it will react with your body.
Compare CBD and Kratom
CBD and kratom are both natural substances. Both have relaxing properties and may support healthier responses to pain, stress and inflammation. But, they are not equally safe. CBD does not have a known unsafe dose and it’s easy to adjust your dose based upon your body’s need on any particular day.
It’s not safe to drive after using kratom since it can make you quite sleepy. CBD, on the other hand, is noted for having relaxing properties, but won’t make you so sleepy that you can’t drive or complete a task. CBD might be used by some for assistance in achieving a better night’s sleep, but it isn’t a dangerous kind of sleepy.
There are no significant adverse reactions associated with CBD, but there can be with kratom.
Addictive Potential of Kratom
As with anything, moderation is key. Kratom dependency can occur. Those that use kratom on a daily basis are more likely to become dependent than those that just use it every once-in-a-while.
CBD has no data showing any link to dependency or addiction. It’s also known that CBD is safe for daily use, even multiple times a day when needed. Scientific data regarding the safety of CBD is continuing to increase and put some weight behind anecdotal claims.
Oddly, kratom is often used to prevent withdrawal symptoms of opioids.
Legality of CBD and Kratom
Kratom is legal in the U.S., but many states are banning it. In other parts of the world, like Australia, Thailand and Malaysia – it’s illegal. CBD, as long as it contains 0.3% THC or less – is considered legal in the U.S. although 3 states still have laws deeming it illegal, with Idaho being one of them.
Choosing CBD over Kratom
When it comes to CBD and kratom, what do people seem to prefer? CBD reigns supreme over kratom. Some of the reason being – CBD is available in a variety of preparations. On the market today are CBD vape, CBD oil tinctures, patches, edibles, topicals and beauty products. There are also pet CBD products.
Most of the time, kratom is used for making tea. It has minimal preparations.
When there’s a choice between CBD and kratom, CBD is chosen because there’s not a known unsafe dose.
Why is Kratom Controversial?
Kratom has become quite a controversial herb. No medical officials have recommended it for actual medical use. Research into kratom is lacking as only a few pieces of research exists. Many states have deemed kratom unsafe.
CBD, however, is getting a lot of attention these days. One pharmaceutical has already been made using CBD, called Epidiolex. Studies regarding CBD continue to mount and continue to show evidence of its true healing power.
CBD is Superior to Kratom
When it comes to choosing between CBD and kratom – many choose CBD without missing a beat. CBD is safe for people of all ages and animals. CBD is also available in many more forms, giving people options for use depending on what makes sense for their lifestyles and individual needs.
Using kratom is almost like rolling dice – you don’t know exactly what to expect.
The information here should help you better understand that just because something is a natural herb, that doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Kratom comes along with some undesirable effects for some, while CBD doesn’t really have any undesirable effects associated with it. When it comes to choosing between CBD and kratom, CBD is hands-down, the safer choice.
